Why it's worth doing

The crunch exists to isolate the rectus abdominis through a short range, without adding the hip work that comes with longer-range exercises like the sit-up or the leg raise. By keeping the lower back flat on the floor for the whole movement, nearly all the resistance lands on flexing the upper spine, which is exactly the job the rectus abdominis is built for.

That same short range is what makes it comfortable to train with higher volume: without much hip flexion involved, it doesn't add extra stress to the lower back beyond holding it down, something that longer hip-range movements do bring with them.

What the crunch doesn't do is remove fat sitting over the abdomen: it strengthens the muscle; training it doesn't decide whether that muscle shows. That distinction matters more than almost anything else about training abs, because it's the promise repeated most often and the one that depends least on the exercise itself.

How to do it

  1. Lie on your back with your knees bent and your feet flat on the floor, hip-width apart.
  2. Rest your hands lightly behind your ears or crossed over your chest; don't lace your fingers or pull on your neck.
  3. Tuck your chin slightly toward your chest and fix your eyes on a point on the ceiling, not on your knees.
  4. Brace your abs and lift your shoulder blades off the floor through a short range, without your lower back ever leaving the floor.
  5. Exhale as you curl up and hold for a beat, feeling the contraction in your abs, not in your neck.
  6. Lower back down under control until your shoulder blades touch again, without fully relaxing your abs between reps.
  7. Repeat at a steady pace; don't use momentum or pull with your hands to squeeze out a few more inches.

Muscles worked

The prime mover is the rectus abdominis, mostly its upper portion: the crunch flexes the upper spine toward the pelvis through a short range, and that's the part of the muscle that shortens the most over that specific stretch. The lower portion of the rectus abdominis takes on much less work, because the pelvis doesn't move here; it's the leg raise, which flexes the hip instead of the spine, that loads that lower area more.

The obliques come in as minor synergists, mainly to keep the torso from rotating to one side as it curls up, but they aren't a major player in this straight, standard version of the movement; they only take on a bigger role in rotational variations of the crunch. The hip flexors, psoas and rectus femoris, should contribute little to nothing: with the feet planted and the hip not flexing, there isn't much torque for them to generate.

As stabilizers, the neck flexors keep the head aligned with the torso without acting as a mover; if they start feeling like they're doing the work, that's the clearest sign the hands are pulling the head up instead of just going along for the ride. The lower back, for its part, isn't doing active work at all; its only job is staying still against the floor while the rest of the spine flexes above it.

That combination, the rectus abdominis as the only real star with everything else in a supporting or fully passive role, is what makes the crunch an isolation exercise in the most literal sense: few ab exercises involve this little contribution from any other muscle in producing the result.

Common mistakes

Crunch or sit-up

Crunch or sit-up is probably the oldest comparison in ab training, and the short answer is that they aren't doing the same job even though they look similar from a distance.

The sit-up brings the whole torso from the floor up to a seated position, a long range that flexes the hip hard on top of flexing the spine. That moving hip pulls the hip flexors, psoas and rectus femoris, in as movers nearly as prominent as the abs themselves, and with the weight of the whole torso passing through a fully flexed spine hundreds of times a session, it's a movement that asks a fair amount from the lower back without needing to.

The crunch stops short on purpose: the range ends as soon as the shoulder blades leave the floor, the hip never moves, and the lower back stays down from start to finish. That isolates the rectus abdominis without adding hip work or a full spinal flexion to the equation, which makes it a more direct tool when the specific goal is the abs and not a functional get-up-off-the-floor pattern.

Neither one is wrong on its own, but for training the abs in isolation and repeatably, the crunch does that specific job better: less unnecessary range per rep, less involvement from muscles that aren't the target, and a lower back that doesn't have to absorb repeated flexion just so the abs get the stimulus they're after.

Frequently asked questions

Does the crunch give you visible abs?

The crunch strengthens the rectus abdominis, but it doesn't decide whether that muscle shows; that comes down to body fat percentage, which is set by diet and total calorie balance, not by how many crunches you do. A strong abdomen trained for months can stay just as hidden as a weak one if the fat covering it never comes down.

Is a crunch the same as a full sit-up?

No. A sit-up brings the whole torso up to a seated position, a much longer range that recruits the hip flexors hard on top of the abs. The crunch stops as soon as the shoulder blades leave the floor, with the lower back staying down the whole time; it isolates the rectus abdominis instead of adding hip work and extra lower-spine motion on top of it.

How many reps or sets should I do?

With a range of motion this short, piling on endless reps stops adding stimulus fairly quickly. Three or four sets of twelve to twenty reps with good technique are enough; once that stops being a challenge, slow the tempo down or hold the top position longer or rest a plate on your chest; don't just chase higher rep counts.

Why does my neck hurt when I do crunches?

Almost always because the hands are pulling the head up instead of just resting behind the ears while the head travels along with the torso. The neck should stay supported but passive; if the abs can't lift the shoulders on their own, it's better to shorten the range than to make up the difference with your arms.

I have lower-back pain, can I still do crunches?

The crunch flexes the spine repeatedly, and that active flexion is exactly the movement most likely to aggravate an existing disc issue or lower-back pain. If that's you, swap it for anti-extension work that doesn't flex the spine, like the dead bug or the side plank, and only come back to a flexion exercise once that base is solid. Pain that persists isn't fixed by adjusting technique: check with a professional before you keep programming any exercise, this one included.

Similar exercises

The crunch trains spinal flexion; the dead bug trains the opposite, resisting spinal movement while an arm and a leg move instead. They're honestly complementary: one teaches the abs to move through a short range, the other teaches them to stay still under load, and a well-trained core needs both, not one instead of the other.
