Why it's worth doing

The hammer curl exists because the underhand grip of a classic curl, even though it isolates the biceps the most, leaves out two other muscles that also flex the elbow: the brachialis and the brachioradialis. Turning the wrist to a neutral grip, palms facing each other, isn't a cosmetic detail; it's what activates those two muscles with real force instead of leaving them as bystanders to elbow flexion.

It's also one of the few arm exercises that adds forearm thickness directly. The brachioradialis shows up on the outside of the forearm when it's developed, and almost no back or pushing exercise loads it with the volume a sustained neutral grip gives it every rep.

By splitting the load across three movers instead of one, the hammer curl also lets you move more weight at the same perceived effort as a supinated curl, which makes it useful for progressing once the biceps alone can't take on more load without losing form. It isn't an "easier" curl; it's a curl that spreads the work differently.

How to do it

  1. Stand holding a dumbbell in each hand, arms fully extended at your sides with a neutral grip.
  2. Keep your palms facing each other through the whole range; don't let your wrist rotate at any point.
  3. Bend your elbow to bring the dumbbell toward your shoulder, without letting the shoulder drift forward.
  4. Pin your elbow against your torso through the whole rep; don't let it drift out or swing.
  5. Curl until your forearm is nearly vertical, without needing hip momentum to finish the range.
  6. Pause briefly at the top, squeezing the biceps and brachialis before you start lowering.
  7. Lower under control back to a straight arm, resisting the weight instead of dropping it.
