Why it's worth doing
The barbell curl lets you load more total weight with the same technique as a dumbbell curl, because both arms move together as a single unit: there's no need to coordinate two separate weights or worry about one side getting ahead of the other mid-rep. That simultaneous bilateral load is the main reason it's usually the first curl variation someone learns in a gym with a barbell on hand.
The straight bar's fixed underhand grip also forces the forearm to stay in the same position start to finish, which simplifies the technique: there's no wrist rotating to find a more comfortable angle like with a dumbbell; there's a single fixed path. For someone just starting out, that lack of freedom is actually an advantage: there are fewer ways to get it wrong.
Loading in small, predictable jumps, a couple of plates a side, also makes week-to-week progress easier to track than with dumbbells, where the available weight jumps tend to be bigger. And since it's a quick lift to set up, one bar instead of two dumbbells to grab, it rotates easily into a back or arm day without eating into the rest of the session.
How to do it
- Stand with your feet shoulder-width apart and grip the bar with an underhand grip, a touch wider than shoulder width.
- Pin your elbows to your ribs before the set starts: they stay fixed there for the whole rep, not a pivot to help swing the weight.
- Curl the bar toward your chest by bending at the elbow, without pushing your hips forward to help drive it up.
- Keep your wrist in line with your forearm: the bar's fixed underhand grip already asks a lot of it without also bending back.
- Squeeze your biceps hard once the bar reaches the top, elbow still pinned to your side, before you start lowering it.
- Lower the bar under control through the full eccentric, resisting the weight the whole way instead of letting it drop.
- Keep the same pace rep to rep: if you need to swing your hips to finish one, the bar is loaded too heavy.
Muscles worked

- Using a hip kick to launch the bar upward on every rep: it's the clearest sign the loaded weight is more than the biceps can move alone.
- Letting your elbows drift off your torso and forward as you curl: it shortens the real working range for the biceps and hands load to the shoulders.
- Dropping the bar in free fall on the way down instead of controlling it: the eccentric phase contributes the most to muscle growth.
